Early Life and Navy Career
P.T. Raghunath’s story is one of inspiration and determination. Hailing from a village where sports aspirations were virtually unheard of, he broke the mold to pursue his dreams. In 1993, he took a significant step by joining the Indian Navy through regular screening, setting the stage for an extraordinary journey.
His career in the Navy took an unexpected turn when he appeared for an aptitude test and was shifted to the technical branch. It was during this time that Raghunath’s true calling emerged. In 1994, he was sent to Lonavala for study and firing practice with a service weapon. Under the guidance of Ustaad Thapa Sir, he displayed remarkable shooting skills, consistently hitting the target’s bullseye.
Rising Through the Ranks and National Recognition
P.T. Raghunath’s exceptional shooting skills quickly gained recognition within the Indian Navy. His journey to join the Navy’s sport shooting team began with rigorous trials and unwavering dedication. What was initially a 10-day training camp extended to nine months, allowing him to further hone his talents.
His hard work paid off in 1995 when he clinched a medal at the National Shooting Championship, marking a turning point in his career. This achievement not only brought him recognition but also led to an early promotion in the Navy in 1996, a promotion that would have otherwise taken a decade.
Raghunath’s journey took an even more remarkable turn as he officially became a part of the Navy’s sport shooting team. This provided him with access to top-notch training facilities and the time needed to refine his skills.
International Success
P.T. Raghunath’s prowess in the 50m 3 Position Rifle event was remarkable, but he later transitioned to the 10m Air Rifle discipline. He made his debut on the international stage in 2006, winning his first international match in Germany, followed by another gold at the Hungary Open.
With the guidance of an Indian team coach from Hungary, Raghunath’s growth as a shooter accelerated. He went on to win a bronze medal at the Asian Championship in 2007.
Over the years, P.T. Raghunath secured a total of 16 international medals, including 11 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze.
His international journey included 30 international participations and 18 world cups. His last world cup appearance was in 2014 in the USA.

Coaching Legacy
Parallely, P.T. Raghunath began coaching the Indian Navy Shooting Sports Team around 2009 and was officially appointed in 2012. His coaching prowess extended beyond the Navy, as he mentored notable athletes like Sanjeev Rajput, Manoj, Rahul Punia, Neeraj Rajput, and Kiran Jadhav, both during his tenure with the Navy and with the Indian national team.
In a significant move, P.T. Raghunath took voluntary retirement from the Navy to embark on a mission close to his heart. He aimed to train and nurture budding shooters, especially those at the grassroots level who needed opportunities and expertise. His expertise, dedication, and unwavering support have become invaluable assets for the Indian shooting community.
Indian Team Coach and Beyond
From 2018 to 2021, P.T. Raghunath served as the official Indian Team coach. During his tenure, he accompanied the Indian team to notable events like the South Asian Games in Kathmandu in 2019 and a World Cup in Korea in 2018. His coaching guidance contributed to the impressive performances of athletes like Pankaj and Chain Singh.
